Control the Format Used to Copy Schematic Images to the Clipboard?

Copying Schematics to Microsoft Word and other Applications

Purpose of This Note

This DesignNote describes the options and formats used to export schematics from DesignWorks™ or LogicWorks™ to other application using the clipboard.

This note applies to: Windows Macintosh
DesignWorks Professional All All
DesignWorks Lite All All
LogicWorks 3.0 + All
Notes: N/A - not applicable to this version.   "3.0 +" indicates version 3.0 and later.  Since this note may apply to multiple versions and platforms, there may be some variation in exact configuration of menu commands and screen layouts from that shown in this note, but the same principles apply.

Clipboard Formats

All current and recent versions of DesignWorks and LogicWorks on both platforms have some capability to copy an image of a schematic onto the system clipboard in one or more standard formats.  Due to changes in operating systems and new features added in various versions, the support available depends on which version you are using, as summarized in this table:

Version Image Formats Placed on the Clipboard Options
All Macintosh Versions PICT None
LogicWorks 3.x, LogicWorks 4.0, DesignWorks 3.x Bitmap None
LogicWorks 4.01-4.03, DesignWorks Lite 4.0-4.02 Bitmap, Enhanced Metafile (EMF/WMF) None
LogicWorks 4.04, DesignWorks Lite 4.03, DesignWorks Professional 4.0d3 Bitmap, Enhanced Metafile (EMF/WMF) ClipboardColors option in the INI file allows you to force clipboard images to be converted to black and white only (see below).

Here are some notes on these formats:

PICT format is the standard object-oriented (i.e. not bitmapped) image format used between Macintosh applications and should give good results when pasted into word processors and image editors.
Earlier versions of LogicWorks and DesignWorks under Windows exported only a bitmap format on the clipboard.  This will give an image identical to the screen image at normal size when pasted into another application, but gives grainy results when printed due to the limited resolution.
Enhanced Metafile Format is an object-oriented format that will give good resolution when pasted into word processors such as Microsoft Word and printed.  However, because this format has not been universally used, some applications interpret it differently and may give varying results.  Our test standard for export is Microsoft Word.  DesignWorks places both formats on the clipboard, so the application can choose which one it uses.

ClipboardColors INI File Option

Windows versions of DesignWorks and LogicWorks starting with DesignWorks Professional 4.0d3, DesignWorks Lite 4.03, and LogicWorks 4.04 have an INI file option to force all images on the clipboard to black and white.  This frequently gives better results if the final document is to be printed.  This can appear in the DW.INI (DesignWorks) or LW.INI (LogicWorks) file in the [System] section, in either of these forms:

ClipboardColors=Yes
ClipboardColors=ToBlack

If ClipboardColors=ToBlack is specified then all colors are translated to black as setting to be used for pens, brushes, etc. If this keyword is missing or an invalid option has been specified then no translation of colors will occur.

Here is an example of a complete INI file with this setting added:

[System]

Font=Arial 10

PrinterScaleLines=All
PrinterColors=Yes
ClipboardColors=ToBlack

[Libraries]
libraryfolder=Libs

[Drawing]

Default_Font=9
Attribute_Font=9
Border_Font=9
MiscText_Font=9
Pin_Font=8
Symbol_Font=9

SolidGrid=on
NormalScale=4
